Public Transportation Saves Riders over $10,000 a Year

Wednesday, June 4, 2014

The American Public Transportation Association’s (APTA) latest Transit Savings Report shows that individuals save more than $10,000 a year using public transportation. This total equates to roughly an $800 savings each month.

The research for this report was done in heavily populated cities. It found that users of public transportation vehicles in 16 of the 20 cities researched saved around $10,000 more a year than individuals who used their own vehicles. The $10,000 figure was found by comparing the cost of commuting with public transportation, to the cost of owning and fueling a personal vehicle. The savings also ranged in each city researched, with New York being the highest with a $15,000 a year savings. The APTA noticed that the large increase in savings with public transportation is due mainly to the four straight months of gas prices increasing.
