New W18 Standards to be Implemented Soon

Friday, May 23, 2014

The Rehabilitation Engineering Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) has recently updated its WC18 standards for wheelchair tie-down and occupant restraint systems (WTORS). The changes made will take effect during the month of December, 2015.

RESNA’s update to the new WC18 now requires that WTORS must be able to withstand the increased forces generated in a second impact test. This test will have a 170 lb. crash-test dummy restrained by a lap belt, which is anchored to the surrogate wheelchair rather than the vehicle itself.

Manufacturers of wheelchair and occupant restraint systems have already been making the necessary changes to ensure that their products meet these new requirements. Q’Straint’s QRT-360 is the first retractor to comply with the new industry standard. To learn more about the QRT 360, click here.
